How much travel data do I really need?

A practical estimate for maps, messages, social media, video, and remote work.

A fast rule of thumb

For most trips, light users can budget about 250 MB per day, everyday users around 700 MB, and heavy users around 1.5 GB or more. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

  • Light: maps, messaging, email
  • Everyday: social media, browsing, occasional video
  • Heavy: frequent video, uploads, calls, or laptop hotspot

What consumes the most data

Video streaming, cloud photo backups, app updates, and hotspot use can consume far more data than maps or messaging. Disable automatic backups and downloads before departure.

  • Download offline maps
  • Set video quality lower
  • Turn off automatic app updates
  • Use trusted Wi-Fi for large downloads

When unlimited can make sense

Unlimited plans can be convenient when you do not want to monitor usage, but they may cost more and can still be subject to fair-use, speed, or hotspot conditions. Read the current provider terms before buying.
